How Often Should You Get A Keratin Treatment And How Long Does It Last

Keratin treatments are often the answer to finally taming frizzy hair, but just like most treatments, you have to be careful how often you do it.

The process involves sealing the hair cuticle with a coat of protein that can add some shine and softness to the hair, all while eliminating frizz. These treatments aren’t recommended for all kinds of hair, however. Those with straight, thin, or highly processed hair should better consider other options. Plus, if you’re really fond of your natural curls or waves, the keratin treatment can also strip some of it down as well.

But those interested in the treatment, and who have the right hair type for it, often have two big questions about it: how long does it last, and how often should they do it?

How Long Can It Last?

That can depend on your hair care and washing routine. Keratin treatment can last anywhere from 2-3 months or even half a year. If you are used to washing your hair multiple times a week, for example, the treatment is bound to last less.

Plus, it also depends on the type of shampoo you’re using. Sulfate-free shampoos are the better choice, as they can ensure the treatment last longer, and are easier on the hair.

How Often Can You Get Them?

The question about the ideal frequency of keratin treatments is linked to a lot of fears people have about this process damaging their hair.

A keratin treatment does not equal damaging the hair follicle. Over time, hair can lose natural keratin, and this treatment helps put it back where it belongs. Most of the damage, however, will come from the flat-ironing section, as it has to seal-in the product. Your stylist will have to choose the ideal temperature based on the type of hair you have, as well as if you have highlights or colored hair to avoid damage.

Keratin treatment should only be used around 2 or three times a year, for multiple reasons. For one thing, they aren’t exactly cheap, and since the treatment can last up to six months if you modify your hair care routine, there’s really no reason to do it more often. If you don’t do it often, you won’t have to worry about damaging your hair either.
