Ombre vs. Balayage_ What’s The Difference in Santa Rosa CA

If you’re looking to color your hair and change your look, you may be confused about the difference between ombre and balayage. Both of these two-tone hairstyles are similar – but not identical. It can be hard to know which one may be right for you.

So, in this blog, Fredrick James Salon will discuss the differences between ombre and balayage, and help you choose the style that’s right for you. Let’s get started.

What Is Ombre?

Ombre is a hair coloring technique where a light hair color such as blonde, rose gold or light brown is blended into your existing hair color, starting from the tips of your hair, and usually reaching about halfway up your hair.

This technique is usually done with a lightener that is placed horizontally on your hair. The hair below this area is typically fully saturated then blended upward to transition from the lighter tips to the darker roots.

This results in a shorter transition between hair colors. Your hair will be darker near the roots and lighter near the tips, and the transition between the two will be very distinct.

What Is Balayage?

Balayage also involves using a lightener to change the color of the tips of your hair. However, a smaller surface of the hair is usually treated at a time, and the lightener is painted vertically, rather than horizontally.

This results in a longer, more natural-looking transition from your ends to your roots. Balayage also typically is not used to lighten all of your ends, so some of your natural hair color will remain at the ends, which results in a more natural look.

What’s Right For Me, Ombre Or Balayage?

Ombre is definitely more of a statement. Because the transition between the two colors of your hair is more dramatic, ombre hairstyles have a very bold look, which is ideal if you’re adventurous when it comes to styling your hair.

In contrast, balayage looks great, but has a more relaxed and laid-back style due to the longer transitions between your hair color. It looks a bit more natural, and is a good option if you’re interested in a two-toned hairstyle, but aren’t sure that the bold ombre is right for you.
